I type for hours and hours. My wrists hurt pretty much constantly. It’s not debilitating, just annoying. Are there any supplements or exercises or whatever I could be doing?

There are a lot of creams, braces and warm-water soaks that will all help with the pain. They will not correct the problem. The problem is the joint and the nerve. You have to find out WHY the problem is there to fix it. Wrist flexion (palm down, toward forearm) aggravates the condition, putting more stress in the carpal tunnel. So, exercising the extensor muscules of the forearm and stretching the flexor muscles will help the problem. A proper mousepad with a wrist pad, a wrist pad for the keyboard and a brace at night will allow you to stop aggravating the problem. Go see a Chiropractor and get the joints fixed, because if you don’t fix the problem it will never go away. Considering the alternative (surgery, with a high failure rate), it makes sense to try the easy way.
better get a wrist brace, I think they are $10 each, that will help you
a regular full body massage will help you to loosen up those muscles in your forearms and wrists.
Add more greens to your diet, and reduce sodas and meats. IT balances the Ph levels in your body, and it helps with a lot of problems. If you want to know more google alkaline diet.
There is a gel called "Arnica Gel" you can find it at your local health store – it’s great for bruising and I use it for arthritis on my older horse. My mom and sister both tried it for carple tunnel, and both say it seems to help. It’s awesome stuff.
I wear a wrist brace at night that I got at the drugstore. It gives my wrists time to rest overnight. It made a major differance for me.
Acupuncture. I have treated numerous patients in my office with success. It is most often resolved in less than 12 treatments.
I read that B vitamins strengthen the nerves.
"John Ellis MD, discovered that patients w/ carpal tunnel had low pyroxidine levels(B6). He gave them 100mg a day for 3 mos, which relieved the symptoms of the majority of patients."
The author thinks a high potency B supplement would be even better.
You can see the info on carpal tunnel in the following link.
EFT, or the Emotional Freedom Techniques, has proven very effective in treating carpal tunnel syndrome. You can learn the techniques for free by getting the Free Get Started Manual from http://emofree.com
It is also great for other kinds of pain management, and "irritations" you may experience. Eg, tired arms, tingly or numb elbows, I’m reaching here, but I’ve used it for a sharp pain that I get sometimes in my back when I’m typing for too long, and it’s amazing. Sometimes it will only take the edge off a severe pain, unless you stick with it, but many times, the pain is gone completely after one or two rounds. Worth looking into, for sure.
The wrist guards are a great ida. You will also want to think about how you lay your wrists on the keyboards. There are special key boards you can buy. Also when you sleep at night, be sure that you are keeping your wrists flat, and not using them to rest your head on, or have them bent.
Massage helps, and stretching too.
The best way bay far to deal with it is to learn a good exercise (tai chi or chi gung). That’s kinda hard though, and requires you to be somewhat experienced with it.
There’s a book (Tai Chi Health for Life) that details the best approach I’ve come across. This is mostly what I do (and to a lesser extent self massage). When Carpal tunnel happens, a lot of blockages (energetic and physical) form in your arm and the only way to really deal with it is to release them, which requires you to look into some non conventional form of medicine.
If you see an accupuncturist, or body work person, they can help as well, but it won’t do as much as self practice and success here extremely dependent on the skill of the person.
Carpal tunnel goes in various stages, and you’re probably at the point where if you continue it, you’ll lose the ability to type within 5 years and need to get surgery (it could be less time), so you might want to consider just typing less.
As far as all the other treatments go, I looked into a lot and tried each one. Here was what I found actually worked (keeping in mind I think that Chi Gung and not typing are the best things):
1) Switch to a different keyboard layout. Odd as this seems, the qwerty one was designed to be the worst typing configuration possible. I learned the alternate (Dvorak), which is faster, and puts a lot less strain on your wrists when you type. Unless you code software, dvorak is a better layout, and it’s built into windows as a language so you don’t need to buy a new keyboard.
2) Apply dmso to the palms and wrists. DMSO is a very strong non toxic anti inflammatory agent, and most of the carpal tunnel problems are essentially a result of inflammation, so DMSO works quite well. If you use this one, you need to make sure the area you applied it to was clean, and that the dmso had nothing mixed into it (and was gotten from a glass container). Dmso will go in through the skin when you apply it, so try to only put a thin layer on.
3) Soak hand and wrist in warm water + epsom salts. This one is only really relevant to do once or twice a month. I don’t think there’s any point doing it more frequently.
The three approaches I listed here are relatively unknown, I basically came up with them myself (thought of what applications each was used for, and then decided it made sense to try for carpal tunnel as well), but they all do help a lot, and I’ve gotten results for quite a few friends after I had to figure all this junk out.
Honestly though, if you really care about your body, the most important thing is to just type less.
Hope all that helps!
Life Extension Foundation Recommendations
Life Extension recommends that people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome avoid activities that aggravate their condition. They should also provide the best possible working conditions for their wrists. Alternative therapies might also be considered. Massage, yoga, and acupuncture have been studied and found to have varying degrees of effectiveness. In addition to a comprehensive preventive lifestyle program, CTS sufferers should consider the following supplements:
Vitamin B6 —200 milligrams (mg) daily. Caution should be exercised, however, because high doses of vitamin B 6 have been linked to neuropathy.
Serraflazyme serrapeptidase enzyme—2 tablets twice daily between meals
Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids)—4000 mg daily, containing at least 1400 mg eicosapentaenoic acid and 1000 mg docosahexaenoic acid
Ginger extract—1000 mg daily
Curcumin—800 to 1600 mg daily
Vitamin A—10,000 to 25,000 international units (IU) daily
Vitamin E—400 IU daily
Selenium—200 micrograms (mcg) daily
See the Life Extension protocol for treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at the link below, it’ s very good.
Alex F had a alot of good info to add a bit to that, try strectching it up down side to side holding each position for about 10 to 15 seconds each, with time and repetition you will notice you could hold positions longer and have more range of motion. very important along with no typing as much or just trying to be more careful while doing so. You may not even have carpal tunnel yet but in the begining stage which is great to get started on the streching and still be able to keep your typing. Get a second opinion it just might be a muscle on forearm that is tight massage will help greatly
I trust emotional freedom technique. Whenever my son
)
experiences carpel tunnel syndrome and comes to me
for treatment just one round of EFT is all it takes to bring
him back to normal though i wish he would stay away from
junk food so that every third or fourth day he wouldn’t
experience this carpel tunnel syndrome. You can learn it
